A health care directive is basically a letter to your medical team directing them not to artificially prolong your life if you are in a permanent, unconscious condition or persistent vegetative state. The health care directive also provides explicit directions to the person charged with making medical decisions on your behalf. In this difficult situation, a clear expression of your wishes helps ease the burden on that person by eliminating uncertainty about whether they are doing the “right thing.”
